ISO 9001 management reviews can bring a lot of value to the business. I say can rather than do, because far too often these are treated more as a necessity rather than an opportunity.
Necessity drives a reactive approach. Opportunity promotes forward-thinking and proactivity.
The trouble is that ISO 9001 is not portrayed as a prestigious or high value anymore. Being the most implemented standard on the planet, it has lost its uniqueness. This can result in clueless implementation and tick box based approach to maintenance.
At the end of this post, you will find the ISO 9001 Management Review template that will help you facilitate meetings and publish reports.
Nevertheless, the framework is sound, and if it’s voiced from the top of the organization, it can strengthen the business.
In the current economic circumstances (COVID-19, lockdown, oil prices, Brexit, to name just a few) quality of communication must be second to none.
If you look closer at what management review covers (as prescribed in the standard) you will realize that the content is not half bad.
- Actions from previous management reviews
- Changes in external and internal issues
- Performance and effectiveness on the QMS
- Resources
- Risks and opportunities
- Opportunities for improvement
- Decisions and actions
Think of it as a simplified “reality check” for the company. The bare minimum to assess the state of the quality management system.
You can learn a lot about the business by reading their QMS management review reports.
My question to you it this – what is your experience with ISO 9001 management reviews?
Is it yet another meeting to comply with yet another standard? Or is it a value-added step in the process of running a business? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
