Last year I collaborated with teams and individuals, assembly operators and CEOs, public servants and entrepreneurs. It may surprise you, but all of the people I have dealt with (myself included) could benefit from a “skills upgrade”.
Hundreds of books have been written to cover soft skills that everyone should master to be successful. Today, as a short reflection on 2019, I will share my take on it.
Before I compiled the list, I asked the following question:
What soft skills would help this person the most?
You may find some of the answers obvious, some being controversial.
- Effective communication – the dialogue is more important than a monologue
- Time management – plan and prioritise in advance
- Control body language – over 70% of communication comes from body language (gestures, posture, etc.)
- Delegate effectively – make sure people know what you expect them to do
- Be results-oriented – no amount of hard work can compensate for lack of results
- Develop others – promote knowledge and collaboration
- Seek an opportunity to learn – make better use of the social media channels (blogs, podcasts, video blogs)
- Never criticise, condemn or complain – this should go without saying; positive attitude and politeness form foundation of good relationships
This is not a definitive list by any means. I would hope you can add more to it. What soft skills matter the most to you?
