It drives me nuts when I hear that quality managers have no or limited impact on the business strategy. What nonsense! In my relatively short career as a quality professional, I accomplished some amazing things.
- I developed a supply chain for a newly created business unit.
- I designed and implemented quality complaints software for 1000+ employees global organisation.
- I imposed the financial compensation scheme on suppliers who failed on performance.
- I sent people back to school so they could get better-paid jobs.
….the list can go on.
Quality is much more than auditing, nonconformities, standards, sampling or calibration.
Don’t let anyone tell you differently.
It’s not bragging if it’s true.
In my recent article, I emphasised the importance of restructuring and strategic planning for businesses in the Covid-19 era. Every single person, regardless of the company size, has a vital role to play. Quality professionals in particular.
I was shocked to get this response from one of the LinkedIn Group admins:
Dear Marcin, I don’t see how the post relevant to quality managers. They are usually not business owners.

If I can do it, you can do it too.
I believe that quality managers can and should support business transformation.
Here are a few reasons why, as a quality manager, you should never sell yourself short:
- You understand customer requirements
- You know first hand about internal and external quality issues
- You have direct contact with Customers
- You work closely with Production, Procurement, R&D and Finance
- You have a broad knowledge of products and services offered by the company
- You are versed in standards and regulations
- You are a master of problem-solving and continuous improvement
