Tons of unread emails in our inboxes have become a sad sign of communication. The most successful people seem to be resistant to the email plague though. What’s their secret?
45 unread emails on Monday, 120 unread emails on Tuesday, getting even worst through Wednesday and Thursday, finally reaching 387 unread emails EOB Friday! Is next week going to be better? We both know that it won’t be…
- Are all these emails necessary?
- How many of them could have been avoided?
- How many of them added value?
- Why have I been added to the circulation list in the first place?
- How did they know my email address?
- Will this ever stop?!
I give you a new definition of SPAM
Sometimes you have to take drastic measures to embrace change. Two paths are leading to uncluttered email inbox. The choice is yours.
You can try to educate everyone on the social/professional protocol of sending emails. Good luck with that my friend!
OR
You can use the extremely effective rule on screening your inbox.
Take the path of Successful People
Save yourself time and frustration by screening your inbox effectively
All marketing emails – DELETE IMMEDIATELY
It’s a no brainer.
Emails that you have been copied on – DELETE IMMEDIATELY
If you are not one of the main recipients of the message ignore it, it is counterproductive and timewasting to read anything only because someone thought “you should know”.
Purpose of communication is to trigger an action. If no action is required from you that there should be no communication. How hard can it be?
If your team is based in the same office/factory/etc. and still emails you – DELETE IMMEDIATELY*
*Unless it is a formal request for approval (holiday, purchase, documentation etc.) or something you have requested (report, statement etc.)
One of the saddest pictures in the office is one when two people are sitting next to each other exchange countless emails instead of having a conversation.
If someone who works for/with you sits in a walking distance from your desk, then there is no excuse for email communication. Get up and let’s have a quick chat.
You will start seeing the benefits of inbox screening immediately.
- Zero unread emails
- Clear communication
- Less ambiguity
- Improved relationships at work
- Quicker solutions
- More time for new opportunities
