Multiple factors contribute to the overall success or failure in getting hired. People usually start with their CV, draft a cover letter and hope for the interview.
While it may take candidates a considerable amount of time to prepare the compelling application, it can take a few seconds to have it rejected by the recruiter.
Some people make fundamental mistakes when writing their CVs and should not be surprised by the lack of positive feedback. I have posted some tips to help you prepare the perfect CV here:
5 tips on writing a proper CV that gets you next job interview.
We are looking for someone with a Higher Education background
The most unfair and ridiculous reason (that HR cannot speak of!) for CV rejection is lack of expected educational background. Specifically, lack of the degree of some sort.
“We are proud of hiring candidates from the best universities in the country.”
There are specific business types where relevant education is critical, e.g. Law, Medical Industry etc. However, there is much more that one can offer apart from the certificate.
The person who I offered the job had no degree. He was raised in a low-income family and had to start working early in his life. There was no time left for schools — point end.
If I have rejected his CV at the early stage, I would have missed an opportunity to work with someone who:
- Knows what it means to work hard,
- Understands values and principles in life,
- Cares for those who need help and support,
- Seeks opportunities to work an extra mile,
- Craves for knowledge and experience,
- Respects people regardless of their attitude
