I knew a manager once who was a real a***** – “aways busy, opposing every change, protective of his job to the extreme and treating his only employee like s***” kind of a guy. Of all of his qualities, the last one was the most concerning. Why? Hear me out.
Day in day out the manager was calling the employee incompetent and limited. Often publicly. He claimed that he tried “everything” to teach the guy how to do the job. Three years in the job and results were not there.
The employee had a different take on the situation. He hated every day of his work. He felt micromanaged, ignored and abused by his boss. Every morning he hoped that the manager would call in sick.
The bad blood between these two was causing all sorts of issues for the company. But that’s a different story.
One should ask why neither of them put a stop to this. Why the employee never left? Why did the manager not fire the employee? Both of them had more than enough evidence to make the decision. Yet, they chose to continue the abuse and toxicity.
