Quality is S**T! Everyone who has ever worked in the manufacturing sector has heard that countless times. It’s not the most subtle way to make a point, but let’s be honest – sometimes we have to be blunt and call things as they are.
Discussions regarding poor levels of quality in manufacturing can reach the n-th level of boredom and frustration. Engineers and managers spend hours on counterproductive meetings only to drift away from the root cause of the problem. Politics, blaming culture, competence.
I will challenge the status quo today.
You can start improving quality literally within hours at ZERO cost!
Most of the companies overlook the most obvious area for improvement – Goods In Inspection.
If you accept poor quality components don’t expect high-quality end product.
I may be stating the obvious but fundamental issues with goods receiving lead to increased CoPQ. This is not for the debate.
It’s back to basics.
- Agree and document acceptance criteria for all incoming goods. Stick with a simple format and quantitative data. Avoid lengthy text in favour of pictures and drawings.
- Communicate acceptance criteria internally (QA, Production, Engineering, etc.) and externally (suppliers). Make sure that everyone understands the requirements. Get sign-off from third parties and work with purchasing team on supplier education & development.
- Reject all non-conforming items. I mean it! Everything that’s out of spec should be rejected at the point of goods-in inspection.
- Handle rejects professionally. Document findings clearly and concisely.
- Never accept faulty items under pressure. Cost of aftersales dramatically exceeds the cost of rejection.
- Demand feedback from the supplier.
- Always claim the cost of rejection (raw material, inspection, processing etc.)
- Use the 8D report to follow through.
- Report on supplier performance to the top management.
