Joe can ruin any project on any given day. Joe is kind of a guy who looks busy all the time. Joe runs multiple projects simultaneously. Joe is always right. Joe…
Don’t be like Joe!
The scenario/formula of failed improvement initiative or change project described below seems never to go away. There is always someone who decides to follow the path that leads to frustration and disappointment. Do you want to know how NOT to approach ANY future projects?
Let’s look at Joe’s way of doing things:
- I know what I am going to do.
- I have a vague idea of how I am going to do this.
- I have no clue why I am doing this.
Does this sound familiar to you?
This, my friend, is a recipe for disaster.

Why are you better than Joe?
Before you embark on the mission to change the world (or your department), you ask yourself a few control questions:
Why is this important?
Why has nobody else done it?
You understand the principle, the underlying reason for what you want to achieve. Maybe you feel that your customers deserve a better product or service. Perhaps you want to challenge the existing way of doing things. You do what you believe in.
How can you beat Joe?
You can explain to anyone Why you are doing what you’re doing. Now, you look at all different options that can get you the result. Maybe it’s the performance that you want to focus on. Maybe changing the customer experience will get you there. You find the right way.
What can you do to seal your success?
You believe that your customers deserve a better product experience.
You believe that this can be achieved by improving the performance of your product.
What are you doing to do now?
You will choose one or more characteristic of the product, that when improved, will blow the customer out of the water.
All it takes to run a successful improvement project or change initiative is to start with WHY. If that’s firmly embedded in your mind, you can focus on HOW and finish off with WHAT.
